Florian Wirtz has become a highly sought-after talent after his standout performances for Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen. The 22-year-old played a pivotal role in the club’s 2023-24 Bundesliga title win and was named Player of the Season following a string of stellar displays.
With Alonso now departing Leverkusen—reportedly eyeing a return to Real Madrid, where he once starred—the German club may be on the verge of losing another key figure from their championship squad. Wirtz is now being linked with a high-profile move to Premier League champions Liverpool.
The Reds have enjoyed a strong start under new manager Arne Slot, and Wirtz is seen as a potential major addition ahead of their title defense next season.
According to a report on social media by a sports journalist, Leverkusen are interested in receiving a Liverpool player as part of the deal for Wirtz. Though the specific player hasn’t been named, it’s believed Leverkusen would prefer to include one of Slot’s squad members along with a transfer fee.
“Bayer 04 Leverkusen are eager to finalize a deal with Liverpool for Florian Wirtz,” journalist Florian Plettenberg posted, noting that the outcome largely depends on Liverpool’s initial offer. He also mentioned that Leverkusen are in the market for a goalkeeper, central defender, striker, and a replacement for Wirtz.
Although Leverkusen eventually lost the Bundesliga title to Bayern Munich, Wirtz had an outstanding campaign—scoring 16 goals and providing 15 assists in 45 matches across all competitions. The club finished second, 13 points behind Vincent Kompany’s Bayern side.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have already secured the Premier League title with one match left to play—leading the table by 12 points ahead of their finale against FA Cup winners Crystal Palace.
Wirtz, who already has 29 caps for Germany, is expected to be a key figure in their 2026 World Cup squad. In addition to Wirtz, Liverpool are also reportedly eyeing Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claiming the Dutch international has already signed a contract.
