Liverpool loanee suffers another injury setback amid taunts from opposition fans
Injury woes have struck once again for Liverpool’s loaned defender Owen Beck, who was visibly distressed as he left the pitch.
Having recently returned from a hamstring injury that sidelined him for weeks, Beck made his comeback for Blackburn in their Championship match against Portsmouth on Saturday. However, his return was short-lived, lasting only 13 minutes before he broke down again at Fratton Park and had to be substituted. To make matters worse, opposition fans mocked him as he limped off.
According to the Portsmouth News, the 22-year-old appeared emotional after seemingly aggravating the same hamstring problem. His frustration was heightened by Portsmouth supporters, who mistakenly accused him of faking the injury and jeered at him. In response, Beck was seen gesturing towards the crowd, with one reporter interpreting his actions as a dig at Portsmouth, suggesting they might face relegation.
However, Portsmouth’s 1-0 victory under John Mousinho moved them seven points clear of the drop zone, making relegation unlikely.
Hope for a quick recovery
Beck’s frustration was understandable, given that he had just returned from a lengthy layoff, only for his comeback to be cut short. While it may not have been wise to react to the fans’ taunts, their accusations of simulation seemed unfair, especially considering how visibly upset he was.
Blackburn manager Valérien Ismaël confirmed that Beck will undergo a scan on Monday to assess the severity of the injury. This latest setback follows a turbulent season, which included an incident where he was bitten by Preston’s Milutin Osmajic and subsequently sent off for his reaction.
Prior to his injury last month, Beck had been enjoying a solid run in the Blackburn squad, even scoring a superb goal against Luton. It’s unfortunate that his promising season has been disrupted once again. Hopefully, the injury isn’t too serious, and he can return to action before the campaign ends.
