With Liverpool on the brink of securing the Premier League title this season, their players are eagerly anticipating their winners’ medals. However, there’s still uncertainty surrounding whether Federico Chiesa will receive one.
Chiesa has played a limited role at Anfield this season, making just 12 appearances across all competitions — only four of which have been in the Premier League. Those league appearances were brief cameos against Bournemouth, Brentford, Ipswich, and Fulham, totaling just 33 minutes before the Easter weekend.
This has raised doubts about his eligibility for a winner’s medal due to his minimal involvement. But there now appears to be some clarity.
Despite playing a key role for Italy in their Euro 2020 triumph, Chiesa has struggled to make a similar impact in his first full Premier League season. He’s scored only twice for Liverpool, with goals in the FA Cup and League Cup Final loss to Newcastle.
Previously, players needed a minimum of five league appearances to automatically qualify for a medal. However, under current rules, clubs receive 40 medals to distribute among players and staff as they choose. While five league appearances still guarantee a medal, it’s up to the club to allocate the rest.
Liverpool have historically been generous — for example, in the 2019/20 season, Harvey Elliott received a medal despite playing less than 10 minutes in the league. That was during Jurgen Klopp’s tenure, and it remains to be seen if current manager Arne Slot will take the same approach.
With Liverpool 13 points clear of second-place Arsenal and only six games left, the title could be wrapped up soon. Slot might then have a chance to give fringe players like Chiesa more league time. If Chiesa features off the bench against Leicester on Easter Sunday, it could help secure his place among the medal recipients and mark another milestone in his career in England.
