Liverpool have already made significant moves in the transfer window this summer, but their business appears to be far from over.
The reigning Premier League champions have targeted the Bundesliga, securing deals for Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Hugo Ekitike from Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt. Additionally, Milos Kerkez has arrived from Bournemouth.
Ekitike had also been on Newcastle’s radar as they looked to reinforce their attack, but Liverpool managed to beat them to his signature.
Newcastle, meanwhile, have faced challenges in strengthening their squad during the off-season, missing out on targets like Ekitike, Benjamin Sesko, and James Trafford.
However, they now seem to be closing in on Brentford forward Yoane Wissa. According to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie on his YouTube channel, Wissa has verbally agreed to personal terms and is eager to make the move.
Liverpool reportedly showed late interest in Wissa as well. The 28-year-old, who netted 19 league goals for Brentford last season, was also linked with Spurs, where former Bees boss Thomas Frank is now in charge.
Downie noted: “One source told me today Liverpool expressed some late interest. Imagine Wissa ending up at Liverpool after all this. But that won’t happen—he’s only headed to Newcastle.”
It’s unclear whether Liverpool had genuine intentions of signing Wissa or if the interest was merely a strategic move to pressure Newcastle in the ongoing Alexander Isak transfer saga.
Liverpool have had a bid for Isak rejected, and although the striker hasn’t submitted a transfer request, he is reportedly very keen on a move to Anfield.
The Swedish forward is said to be “furious” after being informed that Newcastle won’t sanction a transfer this summer. Despite his desire to join Liverpool, the club remains adamant about keeping the player, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season.
With speculation swirling, Isak was left out of Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia and has been training separately from the squad. Manager Eddie Howe has confirmed that Isak won’t be available for their opening Premier League clash against Aston Villa.
