Liverpool supporters have taken to social media to share their thoughts following the Reds’ pre-season clash with AC Milan.
The match, held on Saturday at Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Sports Park, saw Liverpool face off against Serie A side AC Milan as part of their pre-season campaign.
New signing Florian Wirtz was handed his debut by manager Arne Slot, and the German gave fans a glimpse of his talent. Despite his promising moments, the Reds suffered a 4-2 defeat, with Milan’s goals coming from a Noah Okafor double and strikes by Rafael Leao and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Liverpool’s goals were scored by Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo.
In the aftermath of the loss, fans expressed frustration online, particularly with the performances of Harvey Elliott and Tyler Morton — both of whom were part of England’s U21 European Championship-winning team earlier this summer.
Some fans called for the pair to be sold, with one writing: “Elliott and Morton need to be flogged ASAP,” while another tweeted: “People watch this first half and are upset Elliott and Morton don’t get more minutes. West Ham, I’m begging you.” Others simply suggested it was time for the duo to move on.
Despite the criticism, Morton completed the most passes in the match (62), with a 94% success rate.
Both players have been linked with potential moves away from Anfield during the summer window, with reported interest from Wolves, West Ham, and Newcastle.
After the match, Slot addressed concerns about Liverpool’s centre-back depth, especially following Joe Gomez’s departure from the tour due to injury. The manager noted: “I don’t think we have a concern at centre back. Ryan (Gravenberch) showed he can fill in there, although we prefer him as a No. 6. Wataru Endo can also play in that position. We do have options, but it’s true Jarell Quansah left and we haven’t replaced him yet.”
Liverpool’s next pre-season match will be against Yokohama F. Marinos on Wednesday in Japan.
