Liverpool’s Pursuit of Isak Hits a Setback During Newcastle’s Clash with Aston Villa
Liverpool’s chances of landing Alexander Isak took a hit during Newcastle United’s Premier League opener against Aston Villa on Saturday.
The 25-year-old Swedish striker was left out of Newcastle’s matchday squad by manager Eddie Howe, who instead started Anthony Gordon up front at Villa Park.
This development comes amid ongoing uncertainty about Isak’s future. A few weeks ago, Liverpool reportedly submitted a bid worth over £110 million including add-ons, which Newcastle rejected.
Isak was also absent from Newcastle’s pre-season tour in Asia and continues to train separately from the first-team squad.
Speaking in a press conference on Friday, Howe addressed the situation, stating that although there has been interest from Liverpool, Isak could still remain at the club beyond the summer transfer deadline on September 1.
“He could still be a Newcastle player after the window closes,” Howe said. “I feel the same way I have all summer. While it’s not entirely in my control, he’s under contract here, which is why I believe he’ll stay.”
Still, a departure hasn’t been ruled out. Should Isak leave, Newcastle would look to bring in a replacement.
According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle have shown interest in Paris Saint-Germain forward Gonçalo Ramos as a potential option. Talks have reportedly taken place via intermediaries, and while a transfer is possible, PSG would prefer a permanent deal rather than a loan.
Newcastle are aiming to add two strikers before the window shuts, with Brentford’s Yoane Wissa also heavily linked. However, securing deals could prove difficult, which could ultimately benefit Newcastle in retaining Isak and frustrate Liverpool’s pursuit.
According to TBR, Ramos, who is under contract with PSG until 2028, is not especially eager to leave Paris. He is reportedly demanding around £200,000 a week in wages — a figure that would make him Newcastle’s top earner, surpassing Bruno Guimarães, who currently earns £160,000 per week (per Capology).
After PSG’s UEFA Super Cup win over Spurs on Wednesday, Ramos reaffirmed his desire to stay, telling reporters: “Yes, I’m staying.”
