Liverpool’s pursuit of Alexander Isak has taken a major hit after Benjamin Sesko reportedly chose to join Manchester United over Newcastle.
Sesko had been a top target for both United and Newcastle this summer. After Newcastle saw an initial bid rejected, they returned with an improved offer. However, Manchester United entered the race with a lower bid, which still convinced the Slovenian forward to prioritize a move to Old Trafford — despite United not offering European football this season.
Sesko’s decision is not only a blow to Newcastle, who had hoped to bring him in, but also to Liverpool. The Reds are monitoring Alexander Isak as a potential signing, and Newcastle were only willing to let the Swedish striker go if they secured a quality replacement — Sesko being their preferred option.
With that move now unlikely, Newcastle are not expected to sanction Isak’s departure. According to journalist Craig Hope, Newcastle were aware that Sesko was leaning toward United last week, but remained hopeful after receiving some encouragement earlier this week. Still, with United now in pole position, Newcastle will turn to other targets — and Isak is no longer considered available.
This leaves Liverpool in a difficult position. With Darwin Nunez reportedly heading for the exit and Diogo Jota tragically passing away, new manager Arne Slot will need to reinforce his attack before the season begins.
While Liverpool have already signed Hugo Ekitike, further additions may be necessary. Rodrygo of Real Madrid had previously been linked, but negotiations have stalled. However, if Isak is no longer an option, Liverpool could revive their interest in Rodrygo before the transfer window closes on September 1.
