Liverpool’s January transfer window has left fans disappointed, with no major signings brought in to strengthen the squad as the club competes on multiple fronts, including the Premier League title race and European competitions.
Adding to supporters’ concerns, the contracts of three key players—Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and Trent Alexander-Arnold—remain unresolved, raising fears that they could leave for free at the end of the season.
Although earlier reports suggested Virgil van Dijk had agreed to a new two-year contract, there has been no official confirmation from the club.
Meanwhile, Van Dijk’s defensive partner, Ibrahima Konate, is among those prioritized for a new deal, as his current contract is set to expire next summer.
The French centre-back recently confirmed Liverpool has offered him a new contract but hinted at uncertainty regarding his decision to sign. Speaking to Fabrizio Romano on X, Konate said:
“It’s true, I’ve been offered a new contract by Liverpool. Am I close to signing it? That’s another conversation!”
Since joining Liverpool in July 2021 for £36 million from RB Leipzig, Konate has become a key figure in the team’s defense, forming a strong partnership with Van Dijk. This season, the 25-year-old has made 22 appearances in all competitions, contributing two goals and one assist.
Konate’s importance was evident earlier in the campaign when a knee injury sidelined him for eight games, exposing the team’s defensive vulnerabilities. While Van Dijk often receives most of the praise, Konate’s exceptional defensive performances, though less heralded, have been equally vital to Liverpool’s success.
