Liverpool received a significant boost after one of their players confirmed his commitment to the club following their 2-1 Champions League victory over Lille on Tuesday night.
Mo Salah opened the scoring with his 22nd goal of the season, but Jonathan David leveled the match for Lille. The visitors were reduced to 10 men after Aissa Mandi received a second yellow card. Harvey Elliott came off the bench to score the decisive goal in the 67th minute, securing Liverpool’s seventh consecutive Champions League win and maintaining their perfect record in the competition.
Elliott, who has struggled for game time this season due to an injury and strong competition, had been linked with moves to Brighton and Borussia Dortmund. However, after scoring, the 21-year-old celebrated with gestures clearly addressing the speculation. He later confirmed his loyalty, saying he has no intention of leaving.
“I think it’s pretty clear—I’m not leaving,” Elliott told Amazon Prime. “This is my team, my club. I’m a massive fan, and we’re in a great position this season. I haven’t paid much attention to the rumors; it’s just part of football, especially in January.”
Liverpool signed Elliott for around £1.5 million, with additional bonuses of £2.8 million. Reports suggest the club would demand £35-40 million if they were to sell him. Despite limited Premier League minutes, manager Arne Slot explained that Elliott’s injury earlier in the season has impacted his ability to regain top form immediately.
“He was unlucky with the injury after two games,” Slot said. “In this league, with its tempo and intensity, it’s tough to return and perform at your best right away. It’s a challenge we’ve faced with several players. We’re working to find the right balance between giving him playing time and maintaining our high performance level to win games.”
