Liverpool seem to be edging closer to signing Alexander Isak from Newcastle, following a significant transfer agreement involving one of their Premier League rivals.
Earlier in August, Liverpool had a £110 million offer for Isak turned down, with Newcastle demanding at least £150 million.
According to Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, Newcastle won’t consider selling Isak unless they secure a replacement striker first.
So far, that has been difficult, as Eddie Howe’s team lost out on Benjamin Sesko and Hugo Ekitike to Manchester United and Liverpool respectively.
Newcastle recently sent scouts to watch Spanish forward Samu Aghehowa playing for Porto, according to Portuguese media Jornal de Noticias (via Sport Witness).
However, their main target seems to be Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, valued at around £40 million.
Brentford manager Keith Andrews confirmed on Thursday that Wissa won’t feature in their opening Premier League match against Nottingham Forest, stating he’s not yet “ready to play” amid transfer speculation.
The DR Congo international briefly left the club this summer but has since returned to training.
A major update came just before the new Premier League season, with The Athletic’s David Ornstein reporting that Brentford have agreed a club-record deal to sign forward Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth.
The Bees will reportedly pay £37 million plus £5 million in add-ons for the 23-year-old, who is unhappy at Dean Court.
Ouattara, who scored seven Premier League goals last season—including a hat-trick against Nottingham Forest—is naturally a winger but also played striker frequently last season when teammates were injured.
It’s unclear if Ouattara’s arrival will lead Brentford to sell Wissa.
With Newcastle journalist Craig Hope suggesting the Magpies might consider selling Isak to Liverpool once they have a replacement striker, any new signing would give Liverpool a stronger position as they try to finalize their British-record transfer before the summer window closes.
