Liverpool’s hopes of signing Alexander Isak have received a significant boost, as Newcastle United are reportedly close to signing a new striker.
With only a few days remaining in the summer transfer window, speculation continues to link Isak with a move to Anfield. The Swedish international has been at the centre of transfer rumours all summer and has even allegedly gone on strike in an attempt to force a move. Newcastle, however, have consistently stated that they would only consider selling Isak if they secure a suitable replacement.
Over recent weeks, several forwards have been linked with a move to St James’ Park. Now, it seems Newcastle may have found their target, with reports suggesting they are closing in on Stuttgart’s highly-rated striker, Nick Woltemade. The 23-year-old enjoyed an impressive season, scoring 17 goals in 33 games, and had previously attracted interest from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
While Newcastle had explored options within the Premier League — including Brentford’s Yoane Wissa and Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen — it now appears their focus has shifted abroad. According to The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, the club is now prioritising a deal for Woltemade.
Internally, Newcastle see Woltemade’s signing as a major acquisition. However, it’s still unclear whether he would be a direct replacement for Isak or for Callum Wilson, who departed on a free earlier this summer. This uncertainty offers Liverpool renewed optimism in their pursuit of Isak.
Meanwhile, Newcastle recently had two bids for Strand Larsen rejected, the latest believed to be around £55 million. Despite positive signals from the player’s camp and his agent Jorge Mendes, Wolves remain unwilling to sell. Some sources suggest Newcastle may submit a final £60 million offer before the window shuts, though Woltemade’s potential arrival could alter their transfer plans.
