Liverpool FC players and staff traveled to Gondomar, Portugal, to attend the funeral of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who were both killed in a tragic car crash in Spain on July 3, 2025. The funeral was held at Igreja Matriz on Saturday morning, following a public wake at the Capela da Ressurreição the previous day.
The club sent a group of representatives, including players like Virgil van Dijk, Caoimhín Kelleher, and Andrew Robertson, along with manager Arne Slot and former stars such as Jordan Henderson and James Milner. Club executives, including CEO Billy Hogan, were also present, having flown in together on a chartered flight arranged by Liverpool.
High-ranking Portuguese officials—President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, and Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença—also paid their respects, along with FC Porto president André Villas-Boas. The church was filled with family members, locals, and football fans, as many gathered to honor the 28-year-old Jota. His wife, Rute Cardoso, and their three children were among the mourners.
Tributes poured in from across the footballing world. Mohamed Salah shared a deeply emotional message, expressing his heartbreak and uncertainty about life without his teammate. Andy Robertson fondly remembered Jota’s humor and warmth. Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp also offered words of sorrow, describing Jota as not just a talented player but a truly kind person.
Supporters lined up outside the church and across Portugal, leaving flowers, scarves, and letters. In Liverpool, fans created a growing memorial at Anfield. The club temporarily suspended all preseason activities, closed official stores, and opened a public book of condolences. It also pledged to continue supporting Jota’s family financially.
The fatal accident occurred near Cernadilla, Spain, when the vehicle Diogo and André were in reportedly suffered a tire failure and caught fire after leaving the road.
