Liverpool are reportedly preparing a £62 million bid to secure the ideal replacement for underperforming striker Darwin Nunez.
While new head coach Arne Slot has enjoyed a strong start at Liverpool, recent setbacks against Fulham, Newcastle United, and Manchester United have raised concerns.
Despite holding a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League table with a game in hand, speculation surrounds the futures of key players. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, and Mohamed Salah are all set to leave as free agents in the summer, with their contracts nearing expiration.
Meanwhile, Darwin Nunez has struggled to find form, scoring only four goals in 24 matches this season. Reports suggest AC Milan is interested in signing the Uruguayan forward.
To address this, Liverpool are said to have identified Napoli striker Victor Osimhen as the perfect replacement.
Liverpool eye Victor Osimhen as Nunez’s successor
According to Anfield Watch, Liverpool have a strong admiration for Osimhen, currently on loan at Turkish side Galatasaray. The report states:
“Liverpool really admire Victor Osimhen, and both (Michael) Edwards and (Richard) Hughes view him as the ideal replacement for Nunez. Liverpool’s interest in Osimhen dates back several years, with Edwards closely following his career since his early days in Belgium and later at Lille.”
Osimhen has been in excellent form this season, scoring 13 goals in 16 appearances across all competitions. He has a market value of €75 million (£62 million), according to Transfermarkt.
In contrast, Nunez has failed to replicate similar numbers, falling behind teammates Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, and Luis Diaz in terms of goal contributions.
Arne Slot’s take on Nunez
Earlier in the season, Slot defended Nunez, stating:
“For me, he has an impact. He hasn’t scored as many goals as he’d like, but his work rate is important. He’s part of a team that scores a lot and wins a lot. As a number nine, of course, he wants to score more, but I evaluate players like Salah and Nunez based on their overall contributions, not just goals.”
Liverpool will face Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday night.
