Alexander Isak now appears likely to remain at Newcastle United this transfer window after Liverpool unexpectedly decided to halt their pursuit of the striker.
Isak had been keen to leave the club this summer and even requested to be left out of Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia. According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Liverpool saw an initial bid for the 25-year-old rejected on Friday. Isak has since been training alone at his former club, Real Sociedad.
The offer, reportedly worth £110 million, was well below Newcastle’s valuation, and new reports suggest that Isak may have no choice but to stay at St James’ Park.
Ben Jacobs reports that Liverpool are unlikely to return with an improved bid due to Newcastle’s firm stance on not selling the Swedish international.
Posting on X, Jacobs stated: “Liverpool currently have no plans to make another bid for Alexander Isak this window. Newcastle’s response has made it clear any further approach would be pointless unless their position changes. The rejected bid was £110m, and personal terms with Isak weren’t an issue.”
Despite being far from the ongoing drama, Isak has remained a key topic on Newcastle’s pre-season tour. Speaking from Seoul, teammate Anthony Gordon addressed the situation in an interview with The Mail.
“I know what Alex is going through,” he said. “For me, it’s been a relief not to be involved in transfer speculation for once. It’s been mentally refreshing after a few summers of uncertainty.
“That’s why I sympathize with him. He’s likely dealing with a lot, as is the club. I just hope everything works out for everyone involved.”
