Liverpool made several changes to the squad this summer, offloading multiple players, but one of those exits might not be permanent.
According to Lewis Steele of Mail Sport, Liverpool included a buyback clause in the £35 million deal that sent Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen. The agreement even outlines future contract terms if the Reds choose to re-sign the 22-year-old defender.
Quansah’s Buyback Clause Could Influence Liverpool’s Defensive Plans
Quansah left Anfield in search of more consistent playing time — something new manager Arne Slot couldn’t offer him this season.
However, Liverpool’s defensive future is uncertain: Virgil van Dijk is approaching the twilight of his career, Ibrahima Konaté is reportedly a target for Real Madrid on a free transfer next summer, and Joe Gomez nearly left the club again this window.
The Reds had tried to sign Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi before the deadline, with a £35 million deal on the table, but Palace opted to keep their captain — leaving Liverpool without the defensive reinforcement many had anticipated.
Why Liverpool Could Look to Bring Back Quansah
Quansah impressed during his breakthrough season, showing maturity and composure in both the Premier League and Champions League. His move to Leverkusen was seen as smart business, especially with a buyback clause offering future flexibility — though it may not be as secure now, with Erik ten Hag already dismissed from the German club.
Mail Sport emphasized that Liverpool’s leadership still views Quansah highly, placing him in the same category as top young talents like Harvey Elliott and Ben Doak.
The buyback clause reportedly stands at €60 million plus add-ons, starting from 2027, keeping the possibility of a return very much alive.
Liverpool also have a strong relationship with Leverkusen, having already signed Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong this summer. If the team’s defensive depth takes a hit in the coming years, bringing Quansah back could be a very realistic solution.
