Liverpool could have a key advantage in their pursuit of Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.
The 25-year-old forward has been linked with a move to Anfield after a standout season for Newcastle, scoring 27 goals and providing six assists in 42 appearances during the 2024/25 campaign — including a goal in the Magpies’ 2-1 Carabao Cup final victory over Liverpool.
According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Liverpool have initiated contact over a possible transfer for Isak, although no official bid has been submitted yet. Despite Newcastle’s public stance that the Swedish international is not for sale, he is reportedly valued at around £120 million.
Both Liverpool and Newcastle are also tracking Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike. After Newcastle had a £64.9 million bid rejected, The Athletic reported that Liverpool also reached out to the Bundesliga club about a potential deal for the 23-year-old Frenchman. However, it remains uncertain whether the Reds intend to sign both forwards. While only two years separate them in age, Ekitike is still seen as a developing talent, whereas Isak has already proven himself in the Premier League.
Liverpool might have a behind-the-scenes edge in the Isak negotiations: Sporting director Richard Hughes has a longstanding relationship with Newcastle boss Eddie Howe from their time together at Bournemouth. Journalist David Lynch suggested this connection could play a role in talks, stating, “Richard Hughes and Eddie Howe are long-time friends… Hughes wouldn’t be entering this process blindly; he must suspect there’s at least a chance Newcastle could be open to a deal.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool legend John Aldridge has voiced concerns about the club’s transfer and contract situation. Speaking to GOAL, he emphasized the importance of resolving the striker issue, especially if Darwin Núñez is to be replaced. He named Isak as the ideal candidate but questioned Newcastle’s willingness to sell. Aldridge also urged the club to avoid another contract drama like the one involving Trent Alexander-Arnold and pushed for Luis Díaz to be given a new deal to avoid losing him on a free transfer.
“There’s already so much going on at Liverpool,” Aldridge said. “The club can’t afford another contract saga — they need to sort out their forward line before the season kicks off.”
