Arne Slot delivers major injury setback for Liverpool ahead of PSG clash
On the eve of Liverpool’s Champions League trip to Paris Saint-Germain, Arne Slot confirmed a significant injury concern, with Cody Gakpo emerging as a major doubt for the match.
The Dutch forward was absent from Liverpool’s open training session on Tuesday, and Slot later admitted in his press conference that Gakpo’s availability for the crucial fixture remains uncertain.
“He was close to returning, but unfortunately, he blocked a shot and felt pain again,” Slot explained. “We’ll assess him tomorrow to see if he can be part of the squad, but it’s going to be a tight call.”
Gakpo, who only recently recovered from an ankle injury that sidelined him for two games in February, had made substitute appearances in Liverpool’s wins over Manchester City and Newcastle. With the Reds enjoying a break over the weekend following their FA Cup exit, hopes were high that he would be fit to start in Paris. Gakpo has been a key figure for Slot this season, scoring 16 goals across all competitions.
However, Liverpool may have to cope without him once again. This could see Diogo Jota retain his place in the attack, as he did against Newcastle, or Curtis Jones return to strengthen the midfield.
In addition to Gakpo’s uncertainty, Liverpool will also be without Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez. Bradley, currently in contract extension talks, has been sidelined since facing Aston Villa, while Gomez is expected to miss most of the season following surgery.
Tyler Morton is also unavailable due to a shoulder injury, and Amara Nallo is suspended after receiving a red card in the final group-stage game against PSV Eindhoven.
