Liverpool Take Swift Measures to Ward Off Real Madrid Interest in Another Rising Star
Liverpool have reportedly taken urgent steps to prevent Real Madrid from targeting yet another player from their ranks.
Earlier this summer, the Reds saw Trent Alexander-Arnold depart for the Spanish giants. While the England right-back was initially set to leave on a free transfer, Real Madrid paid £10 million to terminate his contract early so he could participate in the Club World Cup. Liverpool responded by signing Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen as his replacement.
More recently, centre-back Ibrahima Konaté — who is in the final year of his contract at Anfield — has also been linked with a potential free transfer to Madrid. In response, Liverpool brought in 18-year-old defender Giovanni Leoni from Parma. A £35 million deadline day move for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, however, failed to materialize.
Now, reports suggest Real Madrid are keeping a close eye on another Liverpool talent: 17-year-old forward Rio Ngumoha. According to Fichajes, the La Liga giants are monitoring the teenager, whose contract expires in 2026. However, Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes is reportedly preparing a long-term deal to secure Ngumoha’s future at the club.
Ngumoha recently made headlines after scoring the decisive goal in Liverpool’s 3-2 win over Newcastle. He struck from the edge of the box, becoming only the fourth player in Premier League history — along with James Vaughan, Wayne Rooney, and James Milner — to score before turning 17.
Reflecting on the milestone, Ngumoha told the club’s official website: “It was crazy. [Coach] Slot looked at me and said, ‘Get on, be ready, and make an impact.’ Thankfully, I did just that.
“When the ball came, I just backed myself. Hearing the fans chant my name was surreal. But I try not to get carried away. I’ve practiced that finish countless times in training, so I just treated it like any other shot — even with the fans behind me. Still, it was incredible.”
