Liverpool may have secured victories in their first two Premier League matches, but their defensive performance has been far from solid.
In their season opener, they defeated Bournemouth, but they looked vulnerable at the back, conceding two goals to Antoine Semenyo. Similarly, against a Newcastle side reduced to ten men, Liverpool allowed a two-goal lead to slip, only to snatch all three points thanks to a last-minute winner from 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha.
Despite boasting a star-studded defensive line-up, with Premier League veteran Virgil van Dijk and French international Ibrahima Konaté at centre-back, there are concerns about their stability. Van Dijk, at 34, is nearing the end of his career, and Konaté has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, which has raised doubts about their partnership.
A potential solution could be Marc Guehi, the Crystal Palace and England defender. Guehi, who captained Palace to an FA Cup final last season, has been near flawless since joining from Chelsea in 2021, earning him speculation of a move to Anfield. However, with Eberechi Eze’s recent transfer to Arsenal, Palace seems hesitant to sell their star player.
Sami Mokbel reports that Liverpool might use Joe Gomez as a makeweight to finalize a deal for Guehi. “Palace are interested and would likely accept an offer of around £30 million plus Gomez on loan,” he said on 5 Live. “But Liverpool are firm in rejecting any loan proposals. They might consider a permanent deal for Gomez, but definitely not a loan. This situation is definitely one to watch.”
Gomez, who joined Liverpool in 2015 and has 15 England caps, made only 17 appearances last season due to injury struggles. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace has yet to win this season, having drawn both their opening matches against Chelsea and Nottingham Forest.
