Liverpool have an impressive ‘wild card’ option they will pursue if negotiations for Alexander Isak with Newcastle fall through.

According to surprising reports, Liverpool have identified a ‘wild card’ target to pursue if their efforts to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United fail.

This summer, Liverpool have already made significant signings, including Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz—who cost a club-record £116 million—and Milos Kerkez, along with Hugo Ekitike, who impressed in their recent friendly victory over Athletic Bilbao.

Despite bringing in Ekitike, Liverpool continue to seek more attacking options, with Isak still a primary target. The Swedish striker has told Newcastle he wants to explore his options this summer and has recently returned to training after a solo recovery stint at Real Sociedad for a thigh injury.

While Isak remains heavily linked with a move away from St. James’ Park, some believe he could stay for the upcoming season.

If Liverpool fail to agree terms with Newcastle for Isak, their focus will shift to ‘wild card’ target Rodrygo.

However, Liverpool face competition from Tottenham, who view Rodrygo as an ideal replacement for Son Heung-min, expected to join Los Angeles FC. According to Spanish outlet Marca, Liverpool have always considered Rodrygo as a fallback option if talks over Isak stall.

Real Madrid have already been approached by several intermediaries inquiring about Rodrygo’s asking price. Agents close to Spurs have also submitted an initial offer and are awaiting a response.

Rodrygo has been at Real Madrid since June 2019, after signing a pre-contract agreement with Santos in 2018. He has made 270 appearances across all competitions and scored 68 goals.

Several clubs are interested in Rodrygo, and he has already agreed personal terms with a Premier League side regarding a potential move away from Real Madrid.

According to ESPN Brazil, Liverpool have already contacted Rodrygo and his agent ahead of making a formal offer. Journalist Siro Lopez revealed that these discussions have led to the 24-year-old agreeing to personal terms with Liverpool, stating, “Liverpool have spoken to the entourage of Rodrygo, and the Real Madrid forward has approved an informal offer of personal terms.”
