Liverpool FC is deeply saddened by the passing of former goalkeeper coach Jose Manuel Ochotorena, who died today at the age of 64.
Ochotorena joined Anfield in 2004 alongside Rafael Benitez, with whom he had previously worked at Valencia, marking the start of Benitez’s managerial tenure at Liverpool. During his three years with the Reds, he contributed to the club’s 2005 Champions League triumph, 2006 FA Cup victory, and their run to another Champions League final in 2007.
After leaving Liverpool, Ochotorena returned to Valencia while also serving as goalkeeper coach for the Spain national team. He was part of the backroom staff during a historic period that saw Spain win consecutive European Championships in 2008 and 2012, as well as the 2010 World Cup.
He stepped down from his role with Spain in 2021 but continued at Valencia, where he had made over 100 appearances as a player after joining from Real Madrid in 1988. Born in San Sebastian, Ochotorena rose through Real Madrid’s youth system and played for the senior team from 1982 to 1988, winning three La Liga titles, two UEFA Cups, and one Copa de la Liga. He also played for Tenerife, Racing Santander, and Logroñés, earning one senior cap for Spain.
