Liverpool fans agreed with Jamie Carragher’s critique of one of their players’ shaky performance in Sunday’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth.
The reigning champions took a 2-0 lead thanks to a debut goal from Hugo Ekitike and a strike from Cody Gakpo, but Antoine Semenyo brought Bournemouth back with two impressive goals after reporting a racist incident from the crowd in the first half.
Federico Chiesa came off the bench to score a brilliant first Premier League goal in front of the Kop, before Mo Salah added his usual opening day goal.
Arne Slot’s team showed moments of attacking brilliance, especially when Ekitike combined well with fellow new signing Florian Wirtz. However, similar to their Community Shield match against Crystal Palace, their defense looked vulnerable.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, commentating on the game, frequently criticized defender Ibrahima Konate for poor positioning. Konate was at fault for both of Semenyo’s goals, with Carragher calling his performance “all over the place” and “absolutely shocking.”
Carragher’s harsh assessment was echoed by fans on X (formerly Twitter), many of whom slammed Konate’s defending. Comments included: “Konate is miles off it,” “Konate should be fined his wages for that pathetic defending,” “Konate needs to go,” and “Konate playing like he’s already agreed to join Madrid.”
Liverpool are currently short on centre-back options after selling Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen and with Joe Gomez frequently sidelined by injuries.
The club has been strongly linked with Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, who has one year left on his contract. Reports suggest Liverpool are reluctant to meet Palace’s asking price for Guehi, but Konate’s recent performance might prompt a reconsideration.
