Liverpool defender Joe Gomez spoke to reporters following his substitution due to an injury during the match against West Ham.

Liverpool enjoyed themselves at the London Stadium on Sunday, recording a big win over West Ham.

The Reds had been heavy favourites going into the game, but have often struggled to get the better of the Hammers on their own turf.

Not this time, though. Three first-half goals saw Liverpool in cruise control and they eventually ran out 5-0 winners.

Unfortunately, it was not all positive for the Reds, however.

Having been in good form of late, centre-back Joe Gomez went down with a hamstring injury in the first-half and was replaced by Jarell Quansah.

Arne Slot gave a worrying update on Gomez after the game, confirming that the 27-year-old could be out for ‘a while.’ And as he gets set to begin his recovery, journalist Paul Gorst has shared what Gomez told reporters in the mixed zone after the game.

The defender has bounced back from some truly awful fitness issues, though, and has been relatively injury free for a while now.

Compared to the myriad of knee problems Gomez has suffered, a little hamstring strain is nothing to get too worked up about.

And taking to X after Sunday’s game, Gorst said that the No.2 was in decent spirits as he spoke to journalists at the London Stadium.

“Joe Gomez confirms in the mixed zone he’s suffered a hamstring injury,” said the reporter.

“Didn’t seem too despondent but facing a spell on the sidelines now. Now set for a scan to discover the severity of the issue.”

Jarell Quansah set to step up for Liverpool
Gomez’s injury is undoubtedly a blow for Liverpool. The Reds are now without their second and third choice centre-backs.

The hope will be that Ibrahima Konate is back fit and ready to play Man United next week.

But with Konate having been absent for over one month, it would be a big ask for the Frenchman to step straight back into what is likely to be an intense game.

Instead, Slot will perhaps have to lean on young Jarell Quansah. Like Gomez, Quansah has had to wait for his chance this season. But with his two more senior teammates going down, he looks set to assume a big role.

Quansah certainly stepped into the breach in impressive fashion on Saturday. And he’ll be hoping to send another reminder of his quality during one of the biggest games of the season next week.
