Arne Slot’s Liverpool side is on the brink of being crowned 2024/25 Premier League champions following their 2-1 victory over West Ham United on Sunday, a match in which Virgil van Dijk played a decisive role. With just six matches remaining, Liverpool now needs only six more points to secure the title, putting them potentially out of Arsenal’s reach.
In his debut season in England, Slot has made a massive impact, losing just twice in the league so far. If he leads Liverpool to the title, he’ll become only the fifth manager to win the Premier League in his first season.
Van Dijk’s crucial header, combined with Arsenal dropping points in a 1-1 draw with Brentford the day before, has set the stage for Liverpool to clinch the title as early as this weekend. They’ll face Leicester City shortly after Arsenal take on struggling Ipswich Town on April 20. If Arsenal lose and Liverpool win, the Reds would seal the title with 79 points, leaving Arsenal too far behind to catch up.
If Arsenal do beat Ipswich, Liverpool’s title celebration could be delayed slightly. The north London side would still need to win their following match against Crystal Palace on April 23 to keep their slim hopes alive. However, even in that case, Liverpool could still secure the championship with a win over Tottenham Hotspur on April 27, officially ending Manchester City’s recent dominance.
