Real Madrid have been linked with a potential move for Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, but recent reports indicate they are not pursuing the Dutch center-back.
Instead, the LaLiga giants are reportedly focused on signing Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, with updates on his future expected soon.
Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold, and Mohamed Salah are all nearing the end of their contracts, allowing them to enter pre-contract negotiations with foreign clubs from January 1 ahead of possible free transfers next summer.
However, journalist Jose Felix Diaz suggests that Van Dijk is likely to sign a three-year contract extension with Liverpool, keeping him at the club until 2028. TEAMtalk, however, reports that Liverpool is optimistic about securing a two-year extension for Van Dijk.
Despite Real Madrid’s admiration for Van Dijk, the club is not actively pursuing him, focusing solely on Alexander-Arnold. This is a positive development for Liverpool, as Van Dijk remains a crucial leader and player, even if he is past his peak.
Liverpool is confident of reaching an agreement with Van Dijk, though negotiations are ongoing. Sources indicate that Van Dijk is open to staying at Liverpool but wants clarity on his role as the club plans to bring in a new center-back in 2025. This uncertainty could prolong contract talks into the New Year, though Van Dijk reportedly won’t engage in pre-contract agreements with other clubs during this period.
The same applies to Alexander-Arnold, despite Real Madrid’s strong interest.
