Liverpool are reportedly monitoring a highly-rated European midfielder and could make a move for him this summer.
Despite the controversy surrounding their 2-2 draw against Everton in the last Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, Arne Slot’s debut season at Liverpool has been a major success.
As they approach game week 25, the Reds hold a seven-point lead over second-place Arsenal at the top of the Premier League. They also comfortably navigated the expanded 36-team Champions League group stage, finishing as group winners.
Additionally, Liverpool have a Carabao Cup final on the horizon, where they will face Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United at Wembley on March 16.
However, one area that did not go as planned was their transfer activity in the summer of 2024. Apart from securing the signing of Italian winger Federico Chiesa, Liverpool failed to add any other first-team players, despite pursuing Real Sociedad’s defensive midfielder Martin Zubimendi.
Fortunately, Ryan Gravenberch has stepped up in midfield, delivering consistently strong performances. While he has remained fit so far, the team experiences a noticeable dip in quality when he is unavailable, with Wataru Endo the most likely backup option.
As a result, Liverpool are now reportedly interested in signing highly-rated Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Warren Zaïre-Emery, according to Anfield Watch.
The Reds are said to be ‘closely following’ the 18-year-old France international, who is under contract with PSG until 2029. Reports indicate that Liverpool representatives have been in touch with his agent, Joao Mendes.
Additionally, Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté could play a role in influencing Zaïre-Emery’s decision, as he has already spoken with the youngster about a potential move to Anfield.
Zaïre-Emery made his senior debut for PSG in August 2022 at just 16 years old, becoming the club’s youngest-ever player. That same season, he set multiple records, including being PSG’s youngest goalscorer and the youngest player to start a Champions League knockout-stage match.
Liverpool are reportedly ‘willing to pay whatever it takes’ to secure his signature and may even exceed his €65m (£54.2m) valuation.
In 2023, PSG manager Luis Enrique praised Zaïre-Emery’s talent, referring to him as a “diamond” after he provided two assists in a Champions League match against AC Milan while still just 17.
“He is a diamond,” Enrique said. “The smartest players always position themselves well in relation to their teammates, and Warren has a natural ability to do that. He has learned it on his own, which makes coaching him very easy.
“One of his greatest qualities is his humility. Despite being just 17, he is incredibly grounded. That is the best legacy a family can pass down, and Warren excels in that regard.”
