Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has been the subject of exit rumours ahead of the summer, with reports suggesting a possible move to Saudi Arabia. However, according to Football Insider, the Premier League club now appears ready to begin contract negotiations with him before the season concludes.
In addition to Jota, Liverpool are also planning to discuss new contracts with Ibrahima Konaté and Luis Díaz, both of whom have played key roles this season. Their contributions have made them vital to the team’s plans going forward, so it’s no surprise the club wants to secure their long-term futures.
Jota, on the other hand, has had a disappointing campaign, hampered by recurring injuries. Now 28, he may already be past his peak, which raises questions about whether extending his stay is the right move. This summer could have presented an ideal opportunity for Liverpool to sell him and invest in a younger, more dynamic forward.
While Liverpool have already tied down key figures like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, the decision to extend Jota’s contract is unexpected. His performances have dipped, and he hasn’t consistently delivered at the top level this season.
Though the Portuguese attacker has been a valuable squad member in recent years, Liverpool should consider aiming higher if they are serious about competing for major honours next season. Jota, who earns £140,000 per week and has only managed six Premier League goals this term, might not be the right fit moving forward. The club may be better served by parting ways and bringing in a stronger option.
