Promising midfielder James McConnell has signed a new five-year deal with Liverpool and is on the verge of completing a loan move to Dutch powerhouse Ajax for the rest of the season, according to James Pearce of The Athletic (via X).
The 20-year-old made his senior debut for the Reds in a Europa League match against Toulouse at Anfield in November 2023. He’s now set to link up with former Liverpool coach Johnny Heitinga, who took charge at Ajax after leaving the Premier League champions following a season under Arne Slot.
Earlier this summer, Liverpool goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros also made a loan switch to Ajax, and McConnell now appears set to follow suit.
Hailing from Morpeth, McConnell featured in Liverpool’s League Cup final win over Chelsea at Wembley during Jurgen Klopp’s final season and has accumulated 13 appearances for the club overall.
Klopp once described McConnell as a “joy to watch,” but under Slot last season, the midfielder made just four appearances in all competitions.
A spell at Ajax, playing in the Eredivisie and the Champions League, should provide valuable experience for the England youth international.
