Liverpool Confirm First January Transfer as Key Players Face Uncertain Futures
Premier League leaders Liverpool have announced their first deal of the January transfer window, despite expectations of a quiet period for the club.
While Liverpool are reportedly not planning major signings, speculation surrounds the futures of key players Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Mohamed Salah, who are in the final months of their contracts. Additionally, the club has reportedly set an asking price for Darwin Nunez, who has struggled to secure a consistent spot in Arne Slot’s starting XI.
On Monday afternoon, just a day after their 2-2 draw against Manchester United, Liverpool confirmed that goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga has agreed to a permanent move back to Fluminense, subject to international clearance.
Club Statement:
“Goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga has agreed a permanent transfer from Liverpool to former club Fluminense, subject to international clearance. The Brazilian bids farewell to the Reds after over four years, during which he was named in the senior matchday squad seven times.”
The statement added:
“Pitaluga also represented Macclesfield FC, St Patrick’s Athletic, and Livingston on loan during his time with Liverpool. He now returns to Fluminense, the team where he began his career. Everyone at LFC wishes Marcelo the best for the future.”
The 22-year-old joined Liverpool in 2020 for a reported £2 million fee. Under Jurgen Klopp, he made his debut in a pre-season friendly against Greuther Furth, which ended in a 4-4 draw.
Pitaluga impressed during a loan spell at Macclesfield, making 26 appearances across all competitions. Subsequent loans to St Patrick’s Athletic and Livingston followed, but he never made a competitive first-team appearance for Liverpool before sealing his return to Brazil.
