Liverpool have been accused of ‘trolling’ Newcastle with a new social media video celebrating their signing of Alexander Isak.
The Reds finalized a £125 million transfer for Isak from Newcastle on deadline day after a lengthy transfer saga.
Isak had gone on ‘strike’ at Newcastle and missed their opening Premier League games following the Magpies rejecting an initial £110 million offer from Liverpool. The Swedish striker took to Instagram to accuse his former club of ‘breaking promises,’ with reports from the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope suggesting this was partly due to Newcastle not offering him a new contract last summer.
Although Isak still had two years left on his contract at St James’ Park, Newcastle chose to sell him on deadline day rather than risk having the 25-year-old sidelined until at least January.
Newcastle made a club-record signing of Nick Woltemade and also secured a last-minute deal for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa on deadline day. Meanwhile, Isak is expected to have limited involvement in Liverpool’s early matches, having not started a competitive game for four months or completed a full pre-season with Newcastle.
On Friday, Liverpool shared a video on social media showing Isak meeting his new teammates after returning from international duty with Sweden since arriving on September 1.
In one clip, Isak is seen embracing captain Virgil van Dijk, with the background music catching fans’ attention.
The song playing was “Rein Me In” by Sam Fender, a North Shields-born artist and passionate Newcastle supporter. Fender hosted two concerts at St James’ Park in 2023, drawing a combined crowd of 100,000, and returned for three shows earlier this year. Notably, during one performance, he altered the lyrics of his hit “Pretty Green Eyes” to shout out Blyth-born Newcastle player Dan Burn.
Liverpool fans quickly picked up on the choice of music, convinced it was a deliberate jab at Newcastle.
One commented, “Sam Fender playing in the background is a great bit.”
Another wrote, “Sam Fender playing in the back just to rub it in.”
A third added, “Liverpool are taking the p**s, that’s a Sam Fender song in the background.”
And a fourth said, “Tbf top s**thousery.”
