Arsenal forward Kai Havertz’s wife, Sofia, has revealed “shocking” messages she received from fans following Arsenal’s FA Cup penalty shootout loss to Manchester United on Sunday, January 12.
Sofia Havertz, 24, who is pregnant, disclosed that she had been sent anonymous death threats targeting the couple’s unborn child.
During the match, the 25-year-old forward missed a crucial chance to secure victory for Arsenal in regulation time and had his penalty saved by United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir in the shootout. Havertz’s miss proved decisive, with Manchester United ultimately winning 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Joshua Zirkzee scored the decisive penalty for United.
Arsenal has reported the online abuse directed at Mrs. Havertz to the police and is working with a specialist data firm to identify those responsible.
The club has condemned the abusive behavior, with Sofia taking to Instagram to share two of the hateful messages. She expressed her shock, saying, “For anyone to think it’s okay to write something like this is so shocking to me. I hope you are so ashamed of yourself. I’m not sure what to even say but please guys, be more respectful. We are better than this.”
Havertz has been an important player for Arsenal this season, making 24 starts in 27 appearances across all competitions, scoring 12 goals, and providing seven assists in 2,232 minutes of play.
Following their FA Cup exit, Arsenal can now focus on the Premier League as they aim to claim the title. Their next match is a crucial North London derby against Tottenham, as they look to close the gap on league leaders Liverpool.
