Jurgen Klopp confessed he had a major “regret” over how he handled one Liverpool player during his final season in charge of the club.

Jürgen Klopp has confessed to having one key regret during his final season as Liverpool’s head coach.

The 57-year-old German, who stepped down at the end of the 2023/24 season and now serves as Global Head of Soccer at Red Bull, reflected on his time at Anfield during a press conference in May 2024.

Despite Arne Slot’s impressive start as Liverpool’s new manager — with the team sitting 15 points clear at the top of the Premier League with only nine matches left — Klopp’s legacy remains secure among Liverpool fans, having delivered the club’s first league title in 30 years in 2020 and a Champions League triumph in 2019.

However, Klopp admitted that, while he didn’t dwell on mistakes, he does regret not giving Harvey Elliott more playing time.

“It’s not like I sit and think, ‘What did we all do wrong?’” Klopp said. “But if I regret one thing a little bit, it’s maybe that Harvey didn’t play often enough.”

Elliott, now 21, was signed by Klopp in 2019 from Fulham and has since been part of squads that won two Carabao Cups, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Club World Cup. Yet, he struggled to secure a consistent starting role.

Under Slot’s leadership this season, Elliott has scored four goals in 19 appearances, including a dramatic late winner against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16 first leg.

Nevertheless, he remains in and out of the starting lineup, having been benched during Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over Southampton, a decision Slot admitted was difficult.

“It’s always tough not starting Harvey, Wataru [Endo], and others,” Slot explained. “But if someone comes on for five minutes, touches their first ball, and scores, it would be strange to completely rethink all your previous lineup decisions.”

Meanwhile, journalist Florian Plettenberg has reported that Elliott could be among the players to depart Liverpool in the upcoming summer transfer window.
