Jude Bellingham has shared an emotional update on how Trent Alexander-Arnold is handling the tragic death of his former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota.
The football community has been shaken by the unexpected deaths of Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, who died in a car crash in northern Spain during the early hours of July 3. Preliminary police reports suggest the Lamborghini Huracan they were in suffered a tire blowout while overtaking, veered off the road, and caught fire.
It is believed Jota had recently undergone surgery in Portugal and, having been advised against flying, was driving through Zamora en route to catch a ferry from Santander to return to Liverpool for pre-season training.
A wake for the brothers was held in Gondomar, Portugal, with their funeral scheduled for Saturday.
Jota, 28, joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 in a £40m deal and went on to score 65 goals in 182 appearances. During his time at the club, he helped win the Premier League, FA Cup, and two League Cups, as well as securing two UEFA Nations League titles with Portugal.
He spent five seasons at Liverpool alongside Alexander-Arnold, who has since moved to Real Madrid. The Spanish club paid a fee to secure his early release so he could participate in the FIFA Club World Cup. Now teammates at Real Madrid, Bellingham and Alexander-Arnold share a dressing room once again.
Speaking to reporters, Bellingham said Alexander-Arnold is coping with the devastating news in his own way and has received support from the Real Madrid squad. He also conveyed condolences to Jota’s family on behalf of the team.
“It’s been a really tough day for him to process,” Bellingham said. “They were team-mates for five years. As a team, we’ve been there for him, and I think he’s managed to reflect and handle things in his own space.
“It’s a terrible tragedy, and I’m sure every player, every club, sends their thoughts and condolences to his family. It’s heartbreaking news, and we just hope his loved ones are given the time, space, and support they need to grieve.”
