Several journalists inside Wembley shared on social media what occurred during the minute’s silence for Diogo Jota before the FA Community Shield match between Liverpool and Crystal Palace.

Before the game, Palace chairman Steve Parish and Liverpool legend Ian Rush placed wreaths pitchside to honor Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who tragically died in a car accident in Spain in July. Liverpool also paid tribute by wearing shirts featuring a special ‘Forever 20’ emblem, retiring Jota’s number permanently.

Fans at Wembley observed a minute’s silence, but some journalists noted that a small group of Palace supporters booed during the tribute.

James Pearce from The Athletic wrote: “Minute’s silence for Diogo Jota disrupted by a small minority of Palace fans. Boos from Liverpool end and referee cut it short.”

Lewis Steele from The Mail added: “Palace fans ruining the minute’s silence for Diogo Jota. Scumbags. (Though 99% were respectful).”

TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher expressed his disbelief: “I can’t understand why a few people would spoil that moment inside the stadium.”

BBC Sport’s Emma Smith reported: “The moment of silence for Diogo Jota and Andre Silva was unfortunately interrupted by a few people shouting and was cut short. Most fans showed their respect with applause after the whistle. Two talented young men taken too soon.”

Ahead of the game, some Palace fans urged others on social media to respect the planned silence. One wrote: “There is a planned silence for Jota today. Let’s all be in our seats 10 minutes before kick-off, or remember this if you’re still in the concourse.”

After the silence, the Liverpool fan account ‘Empire of the Kop’ posted: “Thank you to those who observed the moment of remembrance for Diogo Jota and Andre Silva. Shame on those who thought it was funny to boo and jeer.”
