Liverpool have reportedly expressed interest in a current Premier League midfielder as they explore potential transfer options.
While much of the attention at Anfield is focused on Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, reports suggest he isn’t the only player being targeted by the club this month.
Last summer’s strong pursuit of Martin Zubimendi highlighted Liverpool’s intent to strengthen their midfield, and a new rumor indicates that the search is still ongoing.
Liverpool show interest in Joao Gomes
Transfer reporter Rudy Galetti revealed on social media that Liverpool, alongside Arsenal, Tottenham, and Manchester United, have recently inquired about Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes.
Despite the interest, Wolves are reportedly unwilling to part ways with the 23-year-old during the January window, unless a significant offer forces them to reconsider.
Gomes has previously expressed his desire to play for Liverpool. Speaking to ESPN Brazil in 2022 while at Flamengo, he called the Reds “a team I would play for” and shared his dream of playing in the UEFA Champions League.
Since moving to Wolves in January 2023, Gomes has been praised as a “super talent” by his former manager Gary O’Neil and lauded for his “outstanding” defensive contributions by pundit Danny Murphy. His 4.14 tackles per game place him among the top 1% of midfielders in Europe’s top leagues, although his other statistics are less remarkable.
While a January transfer seems unlikely, Wolves’ battle for Premier League survival could change the situation in the summer. Should the club be relegated, Liverpool may consider a move similar to their acquisitions of Gini Wijnaldum and Andy Robertson from relegated sides, viewing Gomes as a valuable addition to Arne Slot’s squad.
