Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp believes Arsenal should retain Gabriel Jesus even if they decide to sign a new striker in January.
The 27-year-old Brazilian forward ended a lengthy goal drought with a hat-trick against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals and added to his tally with two goals in a 5-1 Premier League victory on Saturday.
Although Jesus has faced criticism for not scoring as much as expected since his move from Manchester City, and there is speculation Arsenal might pursue a new No.9 in the January transfer window, Redknapp feels Jesus has proven his worth to Mikel Arteta’s squad this week.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Redknapp praised Jesus, saying, “That was a big result. This week, they’ve realized they’ve got a player who can still do a great job. It’s crucial he stays fit and scores goals. If they sign someone else in January, that’s fine, but having a player like him—who can start or come off the bench—is vital.”
Jesus was resolute when discussing his successful week, noting that he has yet to lose a Premier League match after scoring, a run that now stands at an impressive 61 games. He expressed his desire for more after a near-miss that could have given him another hat-trick.
“I’m very happy with the goals as a number nine,” Jesus said. “I know the pressure to score is always there, but the win and the three points were crucial today. I’m the type of guy who wants to work hard. I know my qualities, and I believe I can score, as long as I position myself well, like I did today.”
He continued, “When I play with a smile, everything changes, so I try to keep my mind strong and help the team. I understand I need to be more in the box to finish opportunities.”
“It’s great to be playing more regularly. I’m experienced enough to know that constant play makes a difference. I’m happy with more chances, but it’s up to me to be in the right positions to score. Playing for Arsenal, a huge club, means the pressure is on the No.9 to deliver goals.”
