Liverpool Missed Opportunity to Extend Lead as Konaté Struggles Against Fulham
Liverpool had a golden chance to extend their lead over Arsenal to 14 points at the top of the Premier League when they faced Fulham on Sunday.
Their title hopes were boosted on Saturday after Everton held Mikel Arteta’s side to a 1-1 draw. However, Craven Cottage has been a tough venue this season, with Marco Silva’s team pushing for European qualification.
Liverpool have historically struggled against Fulham, and Sunday’s match was no different, as they got off to a shaky start.
Carragher Criticizes Konaté’s Performance
Ibrahima Konaté nearly put Liverpool in trouble early on with a costly mistake that gifted Fulham a clear scoring chance. Luckily, it didn’t result in a goal, thanks to quick defending from Virgil van Dijk.
Jamie Carragher, providing commentary for Sky Sports, was unimpressed with Konaté’s decision-making.
“It starts with Konaté messing about with the ball, I mean what’s he doing?” Carragher remarked. “It’s not the first time Van Dijk has had to bail him out, and he’s done it again.”
Konaté’s struggles didn’t end there. Shortly after, he mishit a clearance, sending the ball behind him and over the bar.
Carragher Points Out Konaté’s Inconsistency
Noticing the defender’s repeated errors, Carragher highlighted why Konaté often misses out on man-of-the-match awards.
“Konaté can feel frustrated when those awards go to Van Dijk, but in the first nine minutes, we’re seeing a couple of reasons why he doesn’t get them,” the former Liverpool defender noted.
While Konaté wasn’t the only Liverpool player who struggled against Fulham, his early mistakes set the tone for a disappointing performance. He will need to improve if Liverpool are to maintain their title challenge.
