Former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher took a cheeky swipe at the club on social media, sparking a buzz among fans.
Carragher, 47, ranks second in Liverpool appearances after Ian Callaghan and earned 11 major trophies during his 17-year tenure with the Reds, including the UEFA Champions League, FA Cups, League Cups, and UEFA Super Cups.
Now a pundit alongside Gary Neville on Sky Sports’ Premier League coverage, Carragher doesn’t shy away from sharing his football opinions. Like many connected to Liverpool, he was thrilled by their successful 2024/25 season, which saw them claim the Premier League title.
This summer, Liverpool strengthened an already solid squad by signing seven new players. Notably, Florian Wirtz joined from Bayer Leverkusen for a club-record fee that could rise to £116.5 million. Full-backs Milos Kerkez (£40m) and Jeremie Frimpong (£29.5m) also arrived from Bournemouth and Leverkusen, respectively, while Hugo Ekitike completed a deal from Eintracht Frankfurt potentially worth £79 million.
Goalkeepers Armin Pecsi (£1.5m), Freddie Woodman (free), and Giorgio Mamardashvili (up to £29m) were added as backups for first-choice Alisson.
However, Carragher appeared to highlight a potential issue with Liverpool’s defensive recruitment.
On Friday, Liverpool revealed their home and away kits for the 2025/26 season, with Carragher posting a photo of himself wearing the home shirt on social media, captioning it: “The new @LFC centre back finally arrives!”
Many fans took this as a tongue-in-cheek critique of Liverpool’s failure to sign a new central defender.
One supporter commented, “Finally, a new centre-back.” Another joked, “VVD will be in trouble now.” A third remarked, “Imagine you and Joe Gomez, Liverpool will be battling relegation like Manchester United.”
Behind the humor, Liverpool currently have just three senior centre-backs: Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Joe Gomez. Rhys Williams, who spent last season on loan, might leave permanently, and defensive midfielder Wataru Endo can cover centre-back if needed. This thin depth could pose risks if injuries or suspensions occur, potentially threatening their title defense.
Carragher had earlier urged Liverpool to sign a left-sided centre-back during the January transfer window. He told The Overlap: “Liverpool lack a player who can cover left-sided centre-back or left-back roles, unlike Arsenal, United, Chelsea, City, and Tottenham, all of whom have such versatile defenders.”
Regarding potential signings, fans are closely watching the Alexander Isak situation, as the striker has been linked with Liverpool from Newcastle. Additionally, Liverpool are reportedly interested in England and Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi. According to BBC Sport, while Liverpool have a genuine interest, they don’t want a drawn-out negotiation and will only proceed if the price reflects the option to sign him for free next summer. Palace’s asking price is £40 million, but Liverpool hope to pay less.
