Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has once again addressed the expiring contracts of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, questioning why the club has yet to secure new deals for them. He also confirmed that Salah has been offered a new contract. Since the start of the season, the futures of Salah, Van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold have been a key topic of discussion as Liverpool aims for silverware.
With all three players now eligible to negotiate free transfers with foreign clubs, Carragher has been vocal throughout the season about the situation. Speaking on The Overlap’s Fan Debate alongside Paul Scholes, the former Manchester United midfielder pointed out that clubs tend to scrutinize players once they pass 30. However, he acknowledged that modern footballers often maintain high performance levels well into their late 30s.
Scholes argued that Salah and Van Dijk, both in their early 30s, should have no issue playing at a top level for another two years. He explained that contract options aren’t always in a club’s favor, as they can be triggered by appearances, and expressed confidence that the duo could comfortably continue playing for at least two more seasons.
Carragher agreed, emphasizing that both players remain crucial to Liverpool and deserve more than just a one-year extension. He questioned why they haven’t signed new deals yet, considering their importance to the team and the club’s strong attachment to them. He also doubted whether other European clubs would be willing to offer them long-term contracts or higher wages.
Focusing on Salah, Carragher dismissed speculation about a potential move to Saudi Arabia, insisting that the forward is too driven and competitive to make such a switch. He believes Salah could continue playing at a high level until his late 30s.
Finally, when asked about Salah’s contract situation, Carragher assured that the 32-year-old has indeed received an offer, despite negotiations remaining private between the club and his representatives.
