Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has outlined the signings he believes Arsenal must make to mount a serious title challenge this season.

Liverpool currently sit atop the Premier League with 36 points, six ahead of second-placed Arsenal. Writing in The Telegraph, Carragher predicted that the title race would be between Liverpool and Arsenal, while offering his insights into the Gunners’ squad needs.

“Arsenal’s biggest challenge right now is injuries,” Carragher explained. “They avoided significant disruption over the last two seasons, but this time their squad is being stretched. Mikel Arteta will find solutions to improve in the second half of the season, and their experience in tight run-ins will be valuable. If they remain close in March, they will believe they can win.”

Carragher expressed confidence in Liverpool’s title chances, attributing their edge to Arne Slot’s strong attacking lineup. However, he acknowledged Arsenal’s potential, provided they reinforce their squad.

Two Attacking Additions Needed

Carragher emphasized that Arsenal’s reliance on key players, particularly Bukayo Saka, is unsustainable. He suggested that Arteta must add two high-quality attacking players—not merely backups, but starters who can challenge opposition defenses and add unpredictability to the lineup.

“Arteta has leaned heavily on the same players, especially Saka,” Carragher wrote. “To keep progressing, Arsenal need two more top-tier attackers to diversify their offensive threats.”

With Saka sidelined for two months due to a hamstring injury sustained against Crystal Palace, Arsenal’s lack of depth has become apparent. Raheem Sterling, currently on loan at Chelsea, could have been a natural replacement but is also injured.

Carragher pointed out Arsenal’s recent focus on defensive stability but highlighted the need for more goals. He also noted the potential impact of their summer signings, including Mikel Merino and Riccardo Calafiori, while suggesting the January transfer window could be a crucial opportunity for Arsenal to strengthen their attacking options, either with a striker or a right-wing replacement for Saka.
