Jamie Carragher was left stunned by Liverpool’s defensive display in their 4-2 win over Bournemouth, singling out the Cherries’ second goal as a key example of the issues.
That goal came when Antoine Semenyo completed a solo run and scored past Alisson during a 4-on-2 counter-attack, which occurred after Liverpool lost the ball following a set piece.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher said:
“It’s hard to believe. How could so many players be ahead of the ball while leading 2-1? That just shouldn’t happen—it’s completely unacceptable.”
He went on to say that even during last week’s Community Shield match, he never felt Liverpool had full control. According to him, Arne Slot has a serious issue to address.
Carragher dismissed the idea that simply signing a new centre-back would fix the problem, noting that a replacement for Konaté wouldn’t change the structural flaws in the team. He pointed to the team’s setup, which includes highly attacking full-backs and a number ten focused more on possession than defending.
“If Liverpool keep playing like this,” Carragher warned, “they won’t be able to win the league.”
