Liverpool have already made some early decisions in the January transfer window.
On Thursday, the club announced that Rhys Williams has extended his loan at Morecambe until the end of the season, with the initial loan set to expire this month.
However, a different situation has unfolded with another defender sent out on loan by the club.
Liverpool Recall Ramsay from Wigan Loan
In the past 24 hours, James Pearce reported for The Athletic that Liverpool has recalled Calvin Ramsay from his loan at Wigan Athletic, where he only made three starts and a total of 12 appearances.
The 21-year-old right-back will return to Kirkby today, with the club planning to secure another loan move for him during this transfer window.
Ramsay, who joined Liverpool from Aberdeen for £6.5 million in 2022, has struggled with a series of injuries and unproductive loan spells at Preston and Bolton.
Ramsay Deserves a Stroke of Luck
If anyone deserves some good fortune, it’s Ramsay, who has faced constant frustration as he tries to establish himself in England. Since joining in the summer of 2022, he has made only 20 senior appearances, with more than half of them coming during his recent loan at Wigan (according to Transfermarkt).
The Scottish defender has undeniable talent, with Jurgen Klopp previously calling him “absolutely exceptional” and Andy Robertson predicting an “amazing future” for him.
At this stage, Ramsay still has a lot to prove if he is to break into Liverpool’s first team. However, there is hope for the youngster if he can finally enjoy a run of consistent starts in the right loan move and, crucially, avoid further injuries.
If Trent Alexander-Arnold were to leave Liverpool this year and Conor Bradley suffers another injury (which, of course, is something fans hope won’t happen), Ramsay could potentially find an opening in Arne Slot’s squad. It was under similar circumstances that other right-backs at Anfield were given their big opportunity and made the most of it.
For now, Ramsay needs another loan spell where he gets regular playing time, with better luck on the injury front.
