According to a reliable insider, Liverpool are poised to ‘make a move’ for a player who could be a ‘key signing’ for the Reds if the deal goes through.
Despite already spending over £250 million on new players for Arne Slot’s squad this summer, it seems that FSG aren’t finished with their recruitment plans for 2025.
On Monday, Fabrizio Romano reported that Liverpool’s management will soon decide whether to pursue Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, who might leave this month since he’s entering the final year of his contract.
Liverpool expected to target Guehi
Mick Brown, a former chief scout for Manchester United and Blackburn with strong connections in football, believes Liverpool will actively try to sign the Eagles’ defender before the summer window closes due to their urgent need for centre-back reinforcements.
He told Football Insider: “Most talk at Liverpool has been about Isak lately, but from what I hear, Marc Guehi remains very much on their radar. I expect them to act before the window shuts. They view Guehi as equally important as Isak for strengthening their squad.
“They have doubts about Ibrahima Konate, who makes too many mistakes and might leave when his contract expires next year. They’ve let Jarell Quansah go, and Joe Gomez isn’t considered a long-term centre-back solution.
“If Liverpool want to compete for every trophy, they can’t take risks defensively. Guehi would be a strong addition and a top signing, and I expect them to be ready to move on him soon.”
Liverpool urgently need a centre-back
Liverpool’s desperate need for defensive reinforcements was clear during Monday’s two matches against Athletic Bilbao. In the first game, Andy Robertson (normally a left-back) and young midfielder Trey Nyoni were forced into central defense, while in the second, midfielder Wataru Endo partnered Konate at the back.
For a club of Liverpool’s stature to be so short on senior centre-backs just days before the Premier League season kicks off is alarming. Slot should be pushing the club hard to secure Guehi before the summer window closes.
Even though Liverpool could sign Guehi on a free transfer next year, they need him now. The Eagles’ £40 million asking price is reasonable for a 25-year-old with proven Premier League experience who impressed in England’s run to the Euro 2024 final.
Brown also emphasized the uncertainty around Konate’s future, a concern that should be ringing loud alarms at Anfield.
At minimum, Richard Hughes must submit a tempting offer to Crystal Palace for Guehi this month. Liverpool have a reputation for being opportunistic in the transfer market, and this is an opportunity they can’t afford to miss.
