Liverpool fans are well aware of the ongoing contract negotiations involving several key players, and now Ibou Konaté’s future has become uncertain.
According to Hamzah Khalique-Loonat of Times Sport, the 25-year-old defender’s contract expires next season. Liverpool began discussions with him before October last year, but talks have stalled. Konaté, who currently earns around £80,000 per week, is reportedly seeking a wage increase to nearly £200,000 per week.
With much of the focus on the contract situations of Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, the expiring deals of players like Konaté have largely gone unnoticed. Andy Robertson and Caoimhin Kelleher are also nearing the end of their contracts, making renewal decisions increasingly urgent.
If Salah and Van Dijk were to agree to short-term extensions, the club could face similar uncertainties again next year.
Konaté’s potential pay rise would make him Liverpool’s third-highest earner, behind only Salah and Van Dijk, according to Capology. However, after a recent defensive performance that John Aldridge criticized as “abysmal” and errors leading to two missed penalties, the timing of his wage demands may not be ideal.
Despite this, Konaté remains a key part of Liverpool’s squad and could be a long-term first-team player, making his contract situation a priority as the club prepares for a busy summer of changes.
