“I wouldn’t be surprised…” – Gary Neville makes Liverpool Champions League prediction ahead of PSG clash

Gary Neville has backed Liverpool to secure the Premier League title by the end of April but is doubtful about their chances of lifting the Champions League trophy in May.

Liverpool head into the second leg of their Champions League last-16 clash with Paris Saint-Germain holding a slender 1-0 advantage. However, after being outplayed for most of the first leg in Paris, the tie still hangs in the balance.

Even if Arne Slot’s men manage to get past PSG at Anfield, they would still need to overcome three more tough opponents to win the final in Munich on May 31 — with a possible semi-final meeting against Arsenal or either Real Madrid or Atlético Madrid looming.

Speaking on his podcast, Neville described the Liverpool-PSG matchup as a “50-50 game” and expressed skepticism over Liverpool’s chances of conquering Europe this season. “I’m not sure I see Liverpool winning the Champions League,” he said. “You can never rule them out, but I don’t quite see it. I wouldn’t be surprised if they went out this week. PSG are a strong team.”

Liverpool, who are cruising toward a Premier League triumph similar to 2020, could still face early Champions League elimination, as they did five years ago against Atlético Madrid at Anfield in the round of 16.

Slot’s team will need a major improvement from their first-leg display in Paris and their sluggish first half against Southampton over the weekend. Meanwhile, PSG, despite their win at Rennes, rotated their squad heavily, keeping key players like Dembele, Kvaratskhelia, Ruiz, Vitinha, and Mendes fresh for the Anfield showdown.

There’s also added motivation for Liverpool after some dismissive comments from PSG’s camp in recent days — something that could fire up the Reds to deliver a strong response.

While the Premier League title looks increasingly within reach, Liverpool will be eager to keep their Champions League hopes alive. The club hasn’t achieved a domestic and European double since 1983/84, and although it would be a massive challenge, Slot’s side shouldn’t be counted out just yet.
