“‘I felt like leaving…’ – Liverpool star reveals emotional pain experienced over the past year”

A Liverpool player has recently opened up about how the 2024/25 season has been the most challenging of his career on a personal level.

Despite Arne Slot utilizing 24 players throughout Liverpool’s successful Premier League campaign, Tyler Morton was not among them, managing only five senior appearances since August—four of which came in domestic cup competitions.

Having turned 22 last October, Morton had previously enjoyed significant playing time while on loan at Hull City and Blackburn Rovers. However, the recently concluded season proved frustrating due to his limited involvement with the first team.

Reflecting on the difficulties he faced, Morton acknowledged this past season as the most mentally taxing of his career so far. Liverpool opted not to send him out on loan for the 2024/25 season, a decision that didn’t sit entirely well with the young midfielder.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, he shared: “I think this has been the hardest season mentally for me. I’ve handled it pretty well thanks to the support of those around me, but it’s been really tough. I’ve dealt with it the best way I could.”

Although Morton has consistently delivered solid performances when given the chance, and has earned praise from figures like Neil Mellor for his excellent attitude, breaking into the starting lineup remains a tall order. With fierce competition in midfield—and potentially more if Florian Wirtz joins the squad—the Wallasey-born player may continue to struggle for minutes unless injuries open up opportunities.

A shoulder injury also limited his involvement in recent months, though he’s now fully recovered and could play a key role for England’s U21 side in their European title defense.

His club future, however, appears uncertain. According to James Pearce via The Athletic, Morton is ‘expected to leave’ Liverpool in pursuit of more consistent playing time.

Approaching his 23rd birthday in October, Morton has made just 14 senior appearances for the Reds. In contrast, Harvey Elliott—who is five months younger—has featured nearly 150 times, and Ryan Gravenberch—five months older—started 37 league games in the 2024/25 season alone.

Given these circumstances, it’s easy to see why Morton might feel disheartened by his limited role at Anfield. If he decides to move on, there would likely be no shortage of clubs interested in offering him regular first-team football.
