Manchester United Could Derail Liverpool’s Move for Alexander Isak
Liverpool’s pursuit of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak may face a significant obstacle — long-time rivals Manchester United. Despite already spending nearly £270 million this summer, the Premier League champions are still eyeing a big-name forward, with the Swedish international firmly on their radar.
Isak, reportedly open to exploring new opportunities following Liverpool’s interest, has prompted Newcastle to consider potential replacements. Brentford’s Yoane Wissa has been mentioned, but RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko is believed to be their top priority. In fact, Newcastle have allegedly submitted a proposal for the Slovenian striker.
However, Manchester United’s involvement could complicate everything — including Isak’s potential move to Anfield.
United Join the Race for Sesko
According to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, United have entered talks with Sesko’s camp and pitched their project alongside Newcastle. Both clubs are expected to formalize their offers to Leipzig soon, though the final decision rests with the player.
Further reports from Laurie Whitwell of the Manchester Evening News indicate that United have narrowed their striker shortlist to Sesko and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins. While Sesko is seen as having more long-term potential, Watkins offers proven Premier League experience — a key theme in United’s recent recruitment.
Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson was also considered, but excessive demands reportedly ruled him out.
If United successfully land Sesko, Newcastle may struggle to secure a replacement for Isak. That could leave Eddie Howe reluctant to part ways with his star forward, especially as the club has had a quiet summer window — with Anthony Elanga being their only major signing so far. Without reinforcements up front, Isak may be forced to remain on Tyneside, putting Liverpool’s plans on hold.
