Harry Redknapp Strongly Defends Daniel Levy Amid Criticism of Spurs Leadership
Harry Redknapp has come to the strong defence of Daniel Levy, arguing that the former Tottenham chairman was unfairly blamed for decisions that were largely driven by club owner Joe Lewis and ENIC.
Earlier this summer, Levy hinted that his contributions to Spurs would be more appreciated after his departure. In many ways, recent fan reactions have supported that belief. Although his exit came earlier than expected, a number of supporters have recently acknowledged and thanked him for the progress the club made off the field under his leadership.
While many fans have viewed Levy as the main reason behind Tottenham’s failure to win major trophies in recent decades, Redknapp believes that criticism is undeserved.
As one of only three managers during Levy’s tenure to remain in charge for over two seasons, Redknapp expressed surprise at the announcement of Levy’s departure. Speaking to talkSPORT, he shared that working with Levy had been a positive experience and highlighted that many key decisions were ultimately made by Joe Lewis.
“I was completely shocked,” Redknapp said about the news. “I never expected it. I thought Daniel would be there forever. When someone messaged me, I thought it was a joke. Running that club was his life. I had no issues with him. I don’t speak to him now, but not because of any bad blood.”
Redknapp described Levy as professional and non-intrusive when it came to football decisions. “He didn’t come to the training ground every day or interfere with team selections. He was supportive and easy to work with. But Joe Lewis, in my view, was the one really in control behind the scenes.”
He also reflected on his own departure from the club, suggesting it was more Lewis’s decision than Levy’s. “People forget that Daniel only owned 25% of the club. Joe Lewis was the main man. He barely showed up to games — maybe ten in 20 years. But he made the final decisions. If he didn’t approve spending, Daniel couldn’t go ahead. Yet Daniel took most of the heat.”
Redknapp Says Levy Deserves Recognition for Spurs’ Successes
Redknapp also challenged the idea that Tottenham failed on the pitch under Levy’s leadership. He noted the number of top-four finishes and consistent Champions League appearances, including a run to the final, as signs of progress.
“You have to give him credit,” he said. “Sure, the trophies didn’t come, and maybe we managers should’ve delivered at least one. But this wasn’t a failure. The club has been in the Champions League often over the last 15 years. And the stadium — it’s incredible. They’re in a great position, and I believe they could be title contenders within the next few years.”
