Gary Neville now regards Liverpool as the “clear favourites” for the Premier League title after their dominant 6-3 victory over Tottenham on Sunday. However, he has warned that injuries could be their biggest obstacle in the race for a 20th league title. The former Manchester United defender pointed out that one player, whom he likens to Rodri for Manchester City, is key to Arne Slot’s plans, stressing the importance of avoiding injuries.
Liverpool’s title rivals, Arsenal, secured a 5-1 win over Crystal Palace earlier in the weekend, while second-placed Chelsea faltered with a 0-0 draw at Everton. As a result, Liverpool, under their new manager, head into Christmas with a four-point lead at the top.
In a season full of surprises – with Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth in the top five and reigning champions Man City possibly trailing by up to 15 points if Liverpool wins their game in hand – anything can happen. However, Neville believes Arsenal are Liverpool’s closest competitors and insists that staying injury-free will be crucial in the title race.

“Liverpool are clearly the best team in the Premier League right now,” Neville said on his Sky Sports podcast after the thrilling 6-3 win at Tottenham. “They’re the clear favourites for the title. Man City’s decline has been dramatic. I’m not sure anyone knows exactly how it’s all gone wrong. Chelsea had a tough match today, but they’re having a good season.”
“I think Arsenal are the team Liverpool need to watch if they can build momentum and close the gap in March and April. But for now, Liverpool are the clear favourites. The biggest risk for them is injuries – losing Van Dijk and Salah would be a big blow. Van Dijk is like Rodri for Liverpool, he holds everything together. Keeping him fit is crucial.”
“There are still big challenges ahead, so we’re not at the point where Liverpool can be handed the title,” Neville added. “But they’re in a great position, and right now they’re the best team in the league, as the table shows.”
This marks the 21st time Liverpool have topped the table at Christmas. They have won the title in 11 of those seasons. However, for Slot and his team, the task is far from complete. With a busy winter schedule ahead, their focus will be on the upcoming Boxing Day clash against Leicester City, followed by matches with West Ham and Manchester United.
