Gabriel Martinelli is set to rejoin Arsenal’s starting XI ahead of Bukayo Saka as both players recover from long-term injuries.
The 23-year-old winger sustained a hamstring injury in February during Arsenal’s 2-0 loss to Newcastle but is expected to return to first-team action in March.
Saka, on the other hand, suffered an injury during Arsenal’s 5-1 victory over Crystal Palace in December and later required surgery, prolonging his recovery.
Due to the severity of Saka’s injury, Martinelli is likely to be back in action up to a month before his teammate.
According to Football Insider’s Arsenal expert Connor Humm, the club is being cautious with Bukayo Saka’s recovery, ensuring he returns gradually from his injury.
Gabriel Martinelli is now expected to be back in action by the end of March, but there are concerns that Saka’s return may take longer.
There had been speculation that both wingers could return after the March international break. However, Football Insider reported on 21 February that Saka would be “lucky” to play again this season.
Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, Humm suggested a May return is more realistic for Saka, while Martinelli’s situation is different.
“I’ve seen reports suggesting Martinelli could be back before March ends, and from what I’ve been told, those reports seem accurate,” Humm said.
“The situation with Saka is more unpredictable because he’s never had a long-term injury before, so it’s unclear how quickly he’ll recover.
“To say he’ll return before March ends wouldn’t be fair. Even when he does come back, he won’t immediately play 90 minutes every game.
“Martinelli’s return by the end of March seems likely, but with Saka, I’m unsure of a timeline. The best-case scenario might be him featuring in the final three or four games of the season.”
Arsenal has also been hit with injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz, who have been ruled out for the remainder of the season. This leaves Mikel Arteta with limited attacking options, relying on Raheem Sterling, Leandro Trossard, and Ethan Nwaneri, while Mikel Merino has been deployed as a makeshift striker.
Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Arteta is frustrated with the club’s hierarchy for failing to strengthen the squad in January.
With no new signings arriving during the mid-season transfer window, Arsenal now faces a depth crisis as they push for the Premier League title.
